USB Flash Drives in Canada (USB-C & USB-A)

A USB flash drive uses simpler flash memory in a small stick, is generally slower, and costs less per gigabyte. A portable SSD uses SSD-grade NAND and a dedicated controller, giving noticeably faster and more consistent transfer speeds with large files, usually at a higher price for the same capacity.

No. USB Type-C describes the physical connector shape, which is reversible and oval, not the data speed. USB 3.2 refers to a transfer speed standard. A drive can be Type-C and still be limited by its internal flash speed or by the USB generation it supports, so check both the connector type and the speed rating.

A USB-C flash drive plugs directly into any USB-C port, including most current phones, tablets, and laptops. For an older USB-A-only port, you'll need a USB-C-to-A adapter, or a drive that includes both connectors, so check the product listing for which connectors are included before buying.

Flash memory holds data through electrical charge in memory cells, which can slowly leak over many years, especially in drives left unused and unpowered for long stretches. As a general rule, don't rely on a single flash drive as your only backup; keep an additional copy of important files on another drive or in the cloud.
