SSDs buying guide

What's the difference between an NVMe SSD and a SATA SSD?

NVMe SSDs connect over PCIe, usually through an M.2 slot, giving them far more bandwidth than SATA. A SATA III drive is rated at 6 Gb/s, roughly a 550 MB/s practical ceiling, while NVMe drives on PCIe Gen4 or Gen5 can reach several thousand MB/s. NVMe is faster overall; SATA still suits older laptops and desktops without an M.2 slot.

Should I get an internal SSD or a portable external SSD?

Internal SSDs (2.5" SATA or M.2 NVMe) install inside a desktop or laptop and need a compatible slot or bay. Portable SSDs connect over USB, often USB 3.2 or USB4, and work with any device that has a matching port, no installation needed. Pick internal for a permanent upgrade, portable for backups or moving files between machines.

What does "PCIe Gen4" or "Gen5" mean on an NVMe SSD?

PCIe generation describes the bus an NVMe SSD uses to communicate with the motherboard. Each generation roughly doubles maximum bandwidth per lane: Gen3 x4 tops out near 3.9 GB/s, Gen4 x4 near 7.9 GB/s, and Gen5 x4 near 15.8 GB/s. A Gen5 drive still works in a Gen3 or Gen4 slot, just at that slot's lower speed ceiling.

Is a SATA SSD still worth buying?

Yes, if your system only has a SATA port or you're upgrading an older laptop or desktop without an M.2 NVMe slot. SATA SSDs are still dramatically faster than a spinning hard drive for boot times and everyday responsiveness, even though they're capped around 550 MB/s versus the multi-gigabyte-per-second speeds NVMe drives can reach.

What happens if an SSD I ordered arrives dead on arrival?

If a part doesn't work out of the box, Devino covers return shipping and sends a replacement or a full refund. Email support@devino.ca with your order number to start. Most items also qualify for a 30-day return as long as they come back in the condition you received them, including any anti-static packaging.
