PS5 SSDs buying guide

What SSD does the PS5 need?

Sony’s requirements are an M.2 NVMe SSD on PCIe Gen4 x4 or newer, 250GB to 8TB, with a recommended sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster. It needs cooling, such as a heatsink, and with the heatsink it must fit the bay: up to 110mm long, 25mm wide and 11.25mm tall.

Does every PS5 model have the expansion slot?

Yes. The original PS5, the PS5 Slim and the PS5 Pro all have the same M.2 expansion slot under a cover, and the same drive requirements apply.

Can I use an SSD without a heatsink in a PS5?

Sony requires cooling. A bare drive, such as the standard WD_BLACK SN850X or Samsung 9100 PRO, needs a separate M.2 heatsink that stays within the bay’s height limit. The simpler route is a drive that ships with one, like the WD_BLACK SN850P, Crucial P310 with Heatsink or Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink.
