FAQ
PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs buying guide
What do I need to use a PCIe 5.0 SSD at full speed?
An M.2 slot wired for PCIe 5.0, found on many AMD AM5 motherboards and some newer Intel desktop boards. Check your motherboard manual for which slot runs at Gen5. In a Gen4 or Gen3 slot a Gen5 drive still works, at that slot’s speed.
Do Gen5 SSDs need a heatsink?
Gen5 controllers run hotter than Gen4 ones, so use your motherboard’s M.2 heatsink or a drive that ships with one, such as the Samsung 9100 PRO with Heatsink. Without cooling a Gen5 drive can slow itself down during long transfers.
Can I use a PCIe 5.0 SSD in a PS5?
Yes. The PS5 expansion slot runs it at PCIe 4.0 speed, and like any PS5 drive it needs a heatsink that fits the bay. Since the console can’t use the extra speed, most PS5 owners choose a Gen4 drive.
