Laptop RAM (SO-DIMM) buying guide

What is the difference between SO-DIMM and desktop RAM?

SO-DIMM is the smaller memory module used in laptops, mini PCs and some all-in-ones; desktop DIMMs won’t fit. DDR5 SO-DIMMs have 262 pins and DDR4 SO-DIMMs 260 pins, and the two aren’t interchangeable.

How do I know which laptop RAM fits?

Check your laptop’s manual or spec page for the memory type (DDR5 or DDR4), the maximum per slot, and whether the memory is soldered, since many thin laptops have no free slot. A faster module, such as DDR5-5600 in a DDR5-4800 laptop, runs at the speed the laptop supports.

Should I buy a kit or a single module?

Two matching modules run in dual-channel mode, which helps integrated graphics and multitasking. If your laptop has two slots, a two-module kit such as the Crucial 16GB (2x8GB) or Kingston FURY Impact 32GB (2x16GB) is the usual choice.
