DDR4 RAM buying guide
Will DDR4 RAM work in a DDR5 motherboard?
No. DDR4 and DDR5 use different pin counts and a different notch position, so a DDR4 stick physically cannot fit into a DDR5 slot, and there's no adapter that makes them electrically compatible. Always match the RAM generation to what your motherboard's manual specifies.
What's a reasonable DDR4 speed to look for?
DDR4 modules commonly range from DDR4-2133 up to DDR4-3600 or higher using overclocking profiles like XMP. Faster DDR4, in the 3200-3600 MT/s range, gives a modest boost for gaming and multitasking, but both your motherboard and CPU's memory controller need to support the speed, or the system falls back to a lower default.
Is DDR4 laptop RAM (SO-DIMM) different from desktop DDR4?
Yes. Desktop DDR4 uses the full-size DIMM connector, while laptops use the smaller 260-pin SO-DIMM version; they are not interchangeable form factors even though both run DDR4. Always check whether your device takes DIMM or SO-DIMM before ordering, since a desktop stick will not fit a laptop's memory slot.
Is it worth buying DDR4 RAM for a new build now?
DDR4 still makes sense if you're upgrading or completing an existing DDR4 system, since it's typically cheaper than DDR5. For a brand-new build, most current motherboards and CPUs have moved to DDR5, so check your platform's supported memory type before assuming DDR4 will work.
