Samsung EVO SSDs & microSD Cards buying guide

What does EVO mean in Samsung's lineup?

EVO is Samsung's mainstream line, priced below its PRO line. It covers NVMe SSDs (990 EVO Plus), 2.5" SATA SSDs (870 EVO and the older 750 EVO) and microSD cards (EVO Plus). The PRO version of each is the faster model.

Samsung 990 EVO Plus or 870 EVO: which do I need?

It depends on your slot. The 990 EVO Plus is an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD with reads up to 7,250 MB/s and needs an M.2 NVMe slot. The 870 EVO is a 2.5" SATA SSD for laptops and desktops with a drive bay and a SATA port, rated at up to 560 MB/s. If your system has a free M.2 NVMe slot, the 990 EVO Plus is much faster.

Is the Samsung 990 EVO Plus PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0?

Both: it runs as a PCIe 4.0 x4 or a PCIe 5.0 x2 drive. Either way it reaches its rated speed (up to 7,250 MB/s reads) in any PCIe 4.0 or newer M.2 slot, and runs at lower speed in a PCIe 3.0 slot.

Does the Samsung 990 EVO Plus work in a PS5?

Yes. The PS5's M.2 slot takes PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSDs and the 990 EVO Plus meets Sony's speed guidance. It's a bare drive and Sony recommends cooling, so add an M.2 heatsink, or choose a drive with one built in such as the 990 PRO with Heatsink.

Will a Samsung EVO Plus microSD card work in a Nintendo Switch?

In the original Nintendo Switch, yes: it takes microSDXC cards like the EVO Plus. The Nintendo Switch 2 only accepts microSD Express cards for game storage, and the EVO Plus is not a microSD Express card. The EVO Plus also suits phones, tablets and dashcams.
